Adamas was built in Sydney, NSW, and launched in 2004. This is a vessel designed to cruise the world in safety and comfort, manageable by two people.
The original design brief was for a motor sailing yacht capable of crossing the most rugged oceans and staying self-sufficient for months, a true world cruiser.
This required large fuel and water tanks, ample refrigeration and comfortable living for a live-aboard lifestyle, as well as sturdy construction.
The designers had a vision for a yacht that is tough yet modern with classic styling.
The outstanding work put into the development of this boat paid off: Adamas is a robust ocean-going yacht built for creating great memories for life.
We purchased Adamas in December 2021 from its original owners. Until then, the boat only cruised around Sydney Harbour.
Our dream was to sail the world. We had been looking for months to find the perfect vessel. And then we found this yacht.
Lifestyle aboardOne outstanding design feature of Adamas is the salon: The center of the live-aboard lifestyle.
It is a true deck salon with large windows, enabling you to view the incredible wonders of the world whilst cruising the seas in any weather, fully protected from the elements.
The large windows are 12 mm reinforced glass that can be further strengthened by removable storm shutters, when required.
There are two living areas: indoor and outdoor. The indoor area includes dining for up to 8 people and is located next to the open-plan full kitchen with electric oven and 4-burner gas cooking, which would make happy the most fastidious on-board chef.
We love great food, and meals aboard Adamas had been legendary among the circle of close friends and lucky visitors. Our own self-taught master chef Darrin dazzles with unique flavor combinations and dishes that would put many restaurant cooks to shame.
Imagine having a freshly caught snapper or king fish, deliciously cooked, with a glass of great wine, while looking at a magnificent scenery created by nature. That’s life!
The outdoor area of Adamas sits up to 10 people comfortably and is perfect for entertaining. It’s fitted with clear plastic covers that allow uninterrupted viewing and can be easily removed on a warm sunny day, allowing breathes in, while offering protection from the sun.
Having all-around 360 degrees glass, the upstairs living area stays warm without the need for heating, even when it’s chilling outside. There is also a reverse-cycle air conditioning system on the boat, allowing you to regulate the room temperature to your desired comfort.
Built to the highest level of Llyod’s certification (1000A1), constructed from steel, stainless steel and aluminium, Adamas is a beast: 20 meters (65 feet) long with a beam of 6.15 meters, weighing 70 tons when fully loaded.
The hull is steel to the deck. The above deck bulwarks are 316 stainless steel plate and the deck saloon structure is aluminum.
The boarder from the hull at deck level is 316 stainless steel joining the deck steel beams and plate structure.
Such construction is unique and assists dramatically with the issues of rust and appearances on topsides.
The hull and all the topside structures are fully faired, an incredible feat giving the aesthetics of a fibreglass finish – not a weld joint to be seen.
The decks are 12 mm teak glued to marine grade ply. The decks are an outstanding visual feature when boarding.
Stability was another important design requirement. In big seas, you want the comfort knowing the yacht can handle the righting of the vessel in heavy conditions.
Adamas boasts a three-quarter fin keel with a lead filled bulb. The keel with the fin is a massive structure under water providing the ability to sail this monster of a motor yacht plus the righting arm moment contributed by the 15 ton lead-filled bulb at a depth of 3 meters under the hull waterline.
Adamas is powered by a single Cummins 6CTA 8.3 M1 engine producing a maximum of 300 hp.
All engineering on this vessel is big in size from the rudder stock design, propeller shaft to many more components. A giant engine room with high ceilings allows easy access to the engine and generator for checks and maintenance.
To power the engine and generator there are 4 fuel tanks holding a total of 7250 litres of diesel, plus a day running tank of 240 litres.
Comfort onboard for long periods of time is not compromised for the crew (Elena and I) or our visitors.
Water tanks hold 4000 litres of water. A water maker also produces 140 litres of fresh water per hour.
Two main cabins accommodate up to 5 people; a small crew cabin fits two more. Each cabin has its own ensuite with a toilet and a screened shower.
SailingA question we get often is, “Does it sail?”
Absolutely, it does.
The pedigree of design, including full fin keel and deep keel, provides Adamas with good sailing capabilities.
We have updated the sail plan to suit the warmer climate regions and less upwind sailing.
Sails on Adamas consist of a slab reef main (two reefs) operated by hydraulic winches, staysail on a manual furler and a large Genoa operated on a hydraulic Furler.
The mast is 25.25 meters from the deck.
The sails provide excellent assistance in motoring, but in 15-20 knot winds, Adamas can sail unassisted very well with no engine power required.
(To be fair, however, we usually don’t switch off the engine until we have consistent 15 knots of wind.)
The operation of Adamas is supported by a 24V DC system with the Generator backup for 240V.
SunPower solar panel structure with new MAXON 3 panels of 430W each was installed in late 2022.
Combined with a larger main engine alternator 24V 175amps, our energy supply living aboard is excellent. The recent addition of the solar rarely sees us require the generator.
Navigation and electronics are all Furuno with the latest TimeZero applications.
So far, we have found Furuno very reliable and will consider some more additions and updates suitable for a vessel of this scale and calibre.
Our refrigeration onboard consists of two Isotherm 90-litre fridges, one 90-litre Isotherm freezer and a smaller domestic fridge freezer of 60 litres. As a backup, we have a 240v/24V portable fridge freezer, should these fail on the route.
The laundry is taken care of with our Miele washer and dryer and a full laundry tub downstairs. With ample storage in this area of the yacht, washing is as easy as possible.

Happy and safe adventures to everyone!
